How to get the images out of a Word file

  1. Select a .docx file, or drop it onto the box above.
  2. Every image stored in the file is listed with a preview, its format, size in pixels and file size, and where the document uses it.
  3. Download one image with the button under it, or choose Download all as ZIP. Untick Include unused images to leave out pictures the document no longer shows.

Your file stays on your device

A .docx is a zipped folder, and the pictures sit inside it as separate files. Your browser opens that folder on your own computer or phone and hands the pictures back to you as they are, so a photo from a site report or a logo from a letterhead never passes through Oppermind. Closing the tab clears the document and the images. Questions

Is my document uploaded?

No. The .docx is unpacked by your browser on your own device and the images are saved straight from it. Oppermind’s servers never receive the file.

Are the images full quality?

You get the exact image files stored inside the document, byte for byte, with nothing converted or recompressed. If Word compressed the pictures when the file was saved, that smaller copy is what’s stored. A picture cropped in Word is stored whole, so the download can show more than the page did.

Why can’t some images be previewed?

EMF, WMF and TIFF images, which often come from older Office versions, Visio or scanners, can’t be shown by most browsers. They’re still listed, and they download as the original files for an app that opens them.

What does Not used mean?

The file holds the image, but no page, header, footer, footnote or comment points to it. That usually happens when a picture was deleted or replaced and the program that saved the file kept the old copy. You can leave unused images out of the ZIP.

Why is a chart or diagram missing?

Charts, SmartArt and shapes drawn in Word are built from data each time the document opens, so they aren’t stored as image files. Only image files stored in the document are listed, which mostly means pictures that were inserted or pasted. If the whole file won’t open, it may be an old .doc, which needs saving as .docx, or password protected, in which case save a copy without the password.
