How to convert Markdown to Word
- Open a .md or .txt file, or choose Type or paste Markdown and paste it in.
- Check the preview beside the text, and fix the Markdown there if something looks wrong.
- Choose Make Word file, then download the .docx.
What carries over to Word
Headings use Word’s Heading 1 to Heading 6 styles. Bulleted and numbered lists become real Word lists, so the numbering carries on when you add an item later. Tables get a bold header row that repeats at the top of each page, code blocks are set in Consolas, and links to web addresses stay clickable.
Images stay out of the Word file because the page never fetches them. Each one is marked with its alt text so you know where it belongs.
Your Markdown stays on your device
Your browser reads the Markdown and builds the Word file on your own computer or phone. Release notes or a report drafted in a Markdown editor never pass through Oppermind, and closing the tab wipes your text from the page. Questions
Is my Markdown uploaded?
No. The .docx is put together in your browser on your own device, and Oppermind’s servers never receive your text.
What happens to images?
They aren’t downloaded, even when the Markdown points to a web address. Each one becomes its alt text in grey, such as [Image: Site plan], so you can see where to put the picture once you’re in Word.
Which Markdown features work?
Headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, links, nested bulleted, numbered and task lists, block quotes, code blocks, pipe tables with column alignment and horizontal rules. Raw HTML tags stay as plain text, except line breaks, and front matter at the top of the file is left out.
How does the Word file look?
Calibri at 11 point on A4 pages, using Word’s own heading styles, so the navigation pane and a table of contents both pick up your headings. To change the look, edit the styles in Word afterwards.
What does a horizontal rule become?
A thin line across the page. Tick Make --- a page break and each rule starts a new page instead, which suits a file you’ve written as one section per page.
