Merge Word files

Put .docx files in the order you want and get one Word document back, styled like the first file. Free, no account, and the merging happens in your browser.

  1. 1 Choose files

Merged on your device. Your files aren’t uploaded.

How to merge Word files

  1. Select two or more .docx files, or drop them onto the box above. Add more files from the list whenever you need to.
  2. Drag the files into order, or tap the arrow buttons on a phone. Leave Start each file on a new page ticked if every file should begin on a fresh page.
  3. Choose Merge Word files and download the .docx when it’s ready.

What the merged file keeps

Text, tables, pictures, lists, links, footnotes and comments from every file come across in the order you set. Each file keeps its own list numbering, so a numbered list in the second file starts where it started before rather than carrying on from one in the first.

The first file sets the look. Its styles, page size, margins, headers and footers apply to the whole document, apart from any section breaks a later file brings with it.

Your files stay on your device

Each .docx is unzipped in your browser and the pieces are stitched into one document on your own computer or phone. A tender response with the pricing in one file and the method statement in another never reaches Oppermind, and the page keeps no copy of the files once the tab is closed. This page counts visits without cookies unless you’ve turned analytics off, and sets analytics cookies only if you allow them, as our privacy policy explains.

Questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. Your browser joins them on your device, and none of them is sent to Oppermind’s servers.

Whose formatting wins?

The first file’s. Its styles apply to the whole merged document, so text in a later file that uses a style with the same name, such as Normal or Heading 1, takes on the first file’s look. Styles that only a later file has are copied across.

Does anything get left out?

Headers and footers from the second file onward, and the merged document takes its page size and margins from the first file. If a later file has section breaks of its own, the pages around them can keep that file’s page size and margins. Pictures, tables, lists, footnotes, comments and tracked changes from every file come across.

Is there a limit on files or size?

There’s no set number of files or size cap. Your device does the merging, so its memory is what counts, and a long run of photo-heavy files can take a while on an older phone.

Can I merge old .doc files or password-protected documents?

Not here. Open each one in Word and save it as a .docx file without a password, then add the new copy.
