How to convert Word to text
- Select a .docx file, or drop it onto the box above.
- Check the text in the preview. Untick Keep list markers if you don’t want the bullets and numbers, or turn off the blank lines between paragraphs.
- Copy the text, or download it as a .txt file.
How the text is laid out
Each paragraph starts on a new line, with a blank line after it unless you turn that off. Bullets come out as • and numbered items get their numbers, indented to match how deep they sit in the list. Line breaks inside a paragraph stay where they were.
Each table row goes on its own line with a tab between cells, so pasting it into a spreadsheet puts every cell in its own column.
Your files stay on your device
The .docx is unzipped and its text put together by your browser, on your own computer or phone. Lifting a contract clause into an email this way means the contract itself never reaches Oppermind, and once you close the tab the page holds neither the file nor the text. Questions
Is my document uploaded?
No. Your browser pulls the text out on your device, so the .docx is never sent to Oppermind’s servers.
What gets left out?
Plain text has no room for pictures, charts, text boxes, shapes, equations or embedded objects, and footnotes and comments are dropped as well. The page names the ones your document has. Headers and footers are left out too, and the page doesn’t mention them. Tracked changes are read as if you’d accepted them, and hidden text is skipped.
How do tables come out?
One line per row, with a tab between cells. A merged cell leaves empty cells after its text so the columns still line up, and a cell holding several paragraphs has them joined with spaces.
What kind of text file do I get?
A UTF-8 .txt file, which keeps accented letters and scripts such as Chinese or Arabic intact. Lines end with a single line feed, which most text editors open without trouble.
Can I convert an old .doc file?
Not here. Save it from Word as a .docx and convert the new copy. For a password-protected document, save a copy without the password first.
