Build a deck from chat

Ask for a deck in chat with the number of slides you want, then check what opens in the Slide editor.

This course uses the Slide editor in the desktop workspace on a computer. The phone has its own Slide Editor, not covered here. It keeps a desktop deck's notes and transitions, but a slide's own title and body can only be edited on desktop, so on the phone you add a text box instead. The Slides chip in an empty chat fills in "Make a slide deck about", or write your own request. Say who the deck is for, what each part should cover and how many slides you want. Write the count in digits next to the word slides, such as 7 slides or a 24-slide deck. Oppermind reads any number from 1 to 60. Leave it out and Oppermind aims for 8 to 12. Oppermind writes the text and picks the order, so read every slide before you rely on it. The deck opens in the Slide editor with an editing chip in the composer, so your next message changes this deck instead of starting a new one.

Practice. Click the Slides chip in an empty chat (the arrow at the end of the chip row shows every chip) and finish the sentence with your own topic and a slide count. When the deck opens, count the thumbnails down the left and compare them with the status line under the pane, which shows the slide you're on and the total.

Arrange slides in the rail

Reorder and copy slides from the thumbnail rail, and step back when a change goes wrong.

The rail down the left shows every slide as a numbered thumbnail. Click one to open it, or drag it and a purple line marks where it will land. Right-click a thumbnail for Duplicate, Copy slide, Paste slide, Delete and New slide after. Copy slide holds the copy in this browser, so you can paste it into another deck later. A deck always keeps at least one slide. Ctrl+Z steps back through your last 50 changes (Cmd on a Mac for every shortcut here). To zoom, use the control at the bottom right of the canvas, hold Ctrl and turn the mouse wheel, or press Ctrl with = or -. Ctrl+0 goes back to 100%. The deck saves to your account a few seconds after each change, or at once with Ctrl+S, and the status line then shows Saved. For a copy to come back to, open Version history in the More menu and press Snapshot now. Restore beside a saved version brings it back, and Ctrl+Z undoes a restore.

Practice. Right-click a thumbnail and choose Duplicate, drag the copy to the end of the deck, then remove it again with Delete from the same menu. Watch the slide count in the status line change each time.

Right-click the Pricing options thumbnail and choose Duplicate. Drag the copy below Next steps, click its title on the canvas and change it to Pricing options (continued).

Add laid-out slides and AI drafts

Add a slide with a ready-made layout such as Quote or Two columns, or let Oppermind draft the next slide for you.

Library opens the Slide library over the slide, and picking a card closes it. A card from its Layouts tab adds a slide straight after the one you're on, with placeholder text to replace. Two columns and Comparison split the body into two columns, Quote sets it large, italic and centred with the name line underneath, and Image + text leaves a dashed frame for a picture. Slide layout changes the slide you're on instead. A layout arranges only a slide's own title and body, so a slide whose words sit in text boxes, as chat-made slides usually do, keeps its arrangement. Draft slide with AI adds one slide at the end, written to follow on from the rest. AI templates… turns a topic into short decks in Corporate, Minimalist and Playful styles. Use this deck replaces your slides and Append adds them. AI templates… is in the More menu, and so are the other two unless the pane is very wide. Ctrl+Z undoes any of them in one step.

Practice. Select your last slide and add a Quote or Two columns card from Library, then type over its placeholder text. Choose Draft slide with AI in the More menu, read what Oppermind wrote, and keep it or remove it with Ctrl+Z.

Select slide 7, open Library, then Layouts and Sections, and click Quote. Replace [The quotation - one striking sentence] with The battery kept our cool room running every night of vintage, and replace [Attribution, source] with Grace Liu, Mount View Cellars. Then choose Draft slide with AI in the More menu.

Edit text on the slide and from chat

Type straight onto a slide for small fixes, and ask in chat for changes that reach across several slides.

Click a title or body text on the canvas and type, then click away to keep it. Insert text box adds a box that reads Click to edit. Double-click it to select its words, drag it to move it, pull a round handle to resize it, or turn it with the handle above. With a text box selected, Font size, Text colour, Bold, Italic and Underline each change it once, and one Ctrl+Z takes that change back. Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I and Ctrl+U work too (Cmd on a Mac). The title and body on a brand-new slide aren't text boxes, so these buttons need a text box to work on. For text Oppermind wrote, ask in chat while the editing chip is on. The assistant sees the text and layout of every slide, and each change it makes lands in the undo history. If a change can't be applied, the reply ends by saying so and why. Find & replace… (Ctrl+H) swaps a word across titles, body text and speaker notes.

Practice. Click the body text on one slide and fix a figure by typing. Add a text box with a short line, make it bold and give it a new colour. Then ask in chat for a change that touches several slides, click the slide and press Ctrl+Z to step back through it.

Change 99 kW to 100 kW everywhere in the deck, and add Josh Tan, lead installer, as the contact on slide 7.

Add a chart and a table

Put your figures on a slide as a chart or a table and set the data in Edit chart.

Insert chart on the toolbar asks for a type (Bar, Line, Pie, Doughnut, Radar or Polar area) and drops in a chart with sample figures for Monday to Sunday. Double-click the chart to open Edit chart. The Data box takes comma-separated values, with the labels across the first row and each series name at the start of its own row below. Add a title and axis labels, pick one of the colour sets, and watch the live preview before you press Apply. Scatter is offered as well once the editor is open. Insert table shows a grid. Move across it until the heading reads the size you want, such as 3×3 table, and click. The first row fills with Header 1, Header 2 and so on, and you type straight into every cell. Export PPTX writes charts and tables as chart and table objects rather than pictures where it can.

Practice. Insert a bar chart on a slide, double-click it and replace the sample data with figures of your own. On another slide, insert a 3×3 table and fill it in.

Double-click the chart on slide 4, type Savings per year ($k) in Title, paste this into Data and press Apply: ,Y1,Y2,Y3,Y4,Y5,Y6,Y7,Y8,Y9,Y10 Savings ($k),18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27

Give the deck a theme and your brand

Give the whole deck one set of colours and fonts, then change single slides where they need it.

Change theme, in the More menu, offers six themes: Aurora, Sovereign, Editorial, Minimal, Atlas and Mono. Each sets the background, text colour, accent, a 12-colour palette and a font pair across the deck. Color palette changes the accent that shapes use, and Typography swaps only the font pair. Background changes only the slide you're on, with a theme colour, an uploaded image up to 8 MB or a custom colour. Apply to all copies the selected slide's theme, transition and background to every other slide. Slides and text boxes that carry their own background, colour or font keep it when the theme changes. Decks made in chat often have them, so line them up with Apply to all or a request in chat. For a deck in your brand from the start, tag a brand kit from the Brands tab of the composer's + menu before you ask. Oppermind then works from the kit's colours, and a kit with a logo can put it on the title and section slides.

Practice. Try two or three themes on your deck and keep one. Give the first slide a different background, then decide whether the others should match before you choose Apply to all.

In More, choose Change theme and pick Editorial. Then select slide 1, choose Background, pick a pale colour under Theme palette, and leave the other slides as they are.

Write speaker notes and present

Keep what you'll say under each slide, then present full screen with your notes and a timer beside the slides.

Speaker notes, in the More menu (Notes on a wide toolbar), opens a drawer under the slide. Type what you'll say and it saves as you go, one set per slide. In More, Slide transition sets how the current slide arrives (None, Fade, Slide left, Slide right, Push up, Push down or Zoom), and Exit animate sets how it leaves: Fade out, Fly out, Zoom out, Shrink, Wipe out or Disappear. In Present the slide plays its exit before the next one appears. Slide numbers puts a number in each slide's bottom-right corner. F5 or Present (in More unless the pane is wide) fills the screen from the slide you're on. The right arrow, Space or Page Down moves on, the left arrow goes back and Esc ends the show. Press N for a notes bar, or P for presenter view with a timer, the next slide and your notes. Open audience window puts the slides in a second window for a projector, if your browser allows pop-ups from Oppermind.

Practice. Open Speaker notes and write two lines each for the first and last slides. Give slide 1 a Fade transition and a Fade out exit, and switch on Slide numbers. Press F5, step through with the arrow keys, then press P and rehearse with the timer running.

Add speaker notes to every slide: two short points I can say out loud, and on slide 7 a reminder to ask Anna for a sign-off date.

Export to PowerPoint and check what carries across

Download the deck as a .pptx file and learn what survives the trip in each direction.

Export PPTX, in the More menu under Files & Export, downloads the deck as a .pptx for Microsoft PowerPoint or another app that opens the format. The file carries text, shapes, connectors, groups, tables, charts, pictures and their crop, rotation, web and slide links, shape effects, backgrounds, master header and footer text, slide numbers, speaker notes, transitions and animations. Two columns, Comparison and Quote slides keep their arrangement as separate text boxes. Slides keep the theme's background and text colour. The theme's fonts are named but not included, so a computer without them shows a stand-in. Audio, video, WordArt, Library emoji and picture adjustments such as brightness are left out. Check every slide before you send the file. Import file… opens a .pptx as a new saved deck, and Ctrl+Z brings back the slides you had. Text, shapes, pictures, groups, backgrounds and connector lines come in, but a connector no longer stays joined to its shapes. Speaker notes, tables and charts stay behind, and older .ppt files don't open.

Practice. Export your deck as a .pptx and open it in PowerPoint or another app that reads the format. Check the chart, the table, the Quote slide, the fonts, any pictures you added and the notes on each slide.

In More, choose Export PPTX, then open the downloaded file and click through slides 4, 6 and 8.
